Sector is mapping energy expenditure and emissions

The Brazilian cement sector is mapping its carbon dioxide emissions and energy efficiency. The objective of the work, made in partnership with global entities of the area, sustainability and energy, is to identify which technologies can be adopted in the country to reduce energy consumption and contribute to contain global warming.

The work is being developed by the International Energy Agency (IEA), the National Union of Cement Industry (SNIC) and the Brazilian Association of Portland Cement (ABCP).

Similar work has already been done with the cement industry in India, where, among other things, it has been possible to increase the energy recovery of waste and biogas and to adopt projects from different sources for energy generation. There is also a global mapping, which was a first step in the survey of sector data, but that did not bring details by regions.

The result may indicate to companies the ways to invest, with satisfactory economic returns, in reducing energy expenditure and emission of gases.

Brazil already has a developed cement industry, the result of efforts of the sector after energy crises in the 70's, but still has the challenge to continue its operations maintaining its competitiveness standards and that the mapping will help in this sense.

To fund the studies, SNIC is supported by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the World Bank, which has been a partner in the initiative in India.
